Backspacer is the upcoming ninth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, scheduled to be released on September 20, 2009. The band will be releasing the album without a label in the United States and through Universal Music Group internationally. Pearl Jam began work for the follow-up to its previous album, Pearl Jam (2006), in early 2008. In 2009, the band began to build on instrumental and demo tracks written during 2008. The music on the record features a sound influenced by pop and New Wave.

Last year's bittersweet return Almost Gone memorialized lost friends and family in profound fashion. The deaths of beat luminaries Ginsberg and Burroughs color parts of her seventh album, but overall Smith is back on the barricades and rocking alongside her Lenny Kaye-led band. "1959," a plea for Tibet, is the catchiest, timeliest song here, and, like "Don't Say Nothing," it merits at least a dash of commercial airplay. To quote her fellow Irishman, poet William Butler Yeats, when Sinead O'Connor's debut, The Lion and the Cobra, was released, a terrible beauty was born. O'Connor has a haunting voice as dark as the Irish bogs, and her unwavering delivery simultaneously inflames and chills. Released in the spring of 1989, the debut album by the Stone Roses remains a blast of magnificent arrogance, a fusion of Sixties-pop sparkle and the blown-mind drive of U.K. rave culture. It opens with the commanding jangle of "I Wanna Be Adored" — singer Ian Brown pressing his case in a cocky whisper, through miles of reverb — and ends with Godlike ego, the extended tribal-dance party "I Am the Resurrection." Everything in between still sounds just as bold and fab: the spangled-Clash gallop "She Bangs the Drums"; the glass-rain guitars and sighs in "Waterfall"; guitarist John Squire's psychedelic spinout in the dark sprint "Made Out of Stone." But Brown, Squire, bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield and drummer Alan "Reni" Wren had only one great record in them; by 1996, they were gone, ruined by infighting and a mediocre follow-up, 1994's Second Coming.

The two-dozen-plus extra tracks spread over the multiple editions of this reissue underscore the sober truth: The Roses were, at best, briefly brilliant. They sound hesitant and brittle on their demos. There are strong B sides and outtakes ("Standing Here") but also too much backward-tape nonsense. The Roses had one more flash of glory, the 1989 single "Fools Gold," nine minutes of simulated-Ecstasy rhythm and glee. That original first LP, though, is the main reason their audacity matters. Everything else, fascinating as it is to have and hear, is mostly lead-up and letdown.

Woodstock Music & Art Fair (informally, Woodstock or The Woodstock Festival) was a music festival, billed as "An Aquarian Exposition", held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha, 0.94 mi²) dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel, in Sullivan County, is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, in adjoining Ulster County.

Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend in front of nearly half a million concertgoers. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in popular music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.

The event was captured in a successful 1970 documentary movie, Woodstock; an accompanying soundtrack album; and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which commemorated the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Dedicated to the memory of John Peel, this compilation from German label Trikont celebrates the more rebellious strains of British music through the mid-sixties to early-seventies, incorporating the first waves of psychedelic music and various other experimental tendencies inherent to British music during the period. The inclusion of big names like Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, The Small Faces and The Yardbirds might seem odd under that premise, but it's not entirely unreasonable to suppose that these artist's were operating at the creative fringes when they first emerged on the scene - certainly, Nick Drake only really found broad recognition after his untimely death.

The most tangibly 'underground' music here though, comes from the likes of the Delia Derbyshire/Brian Hodgson project White Noise (whose always flabbergasting 'Love Without Sound' is included), John's Children, Ansley Dunbar's Retaliation, Lol Coxhill (covering I Am The Walrus'), Deviants, Liverpudlian beat poet Adrien Henri (whose ironic call for Batman to help out in the Vietnam war sort of anticipates Alan Moore's Watchmen) and prog-folkers Comus.

Not everything here will be new to you, but this is a really great, thoughtfully put together compilation with an abundance of top class material. Highly recommended.
